The good news for innovation is that in the year 2021, 3.4 million patents were filed. This is the highest level ever. Earlier in 2018, 3.3 million patents were filed. Asia's share in patent filing has also increased. Two-thirds of the world's patents are now being filed from Asia. china files almost half of the world's patents. At the same time, India's performance has improved, but still, india is 25 times behind china in terms of filing patents.

China is continuously increasing its investment in the field of technology and innovation. Last year, china filed more than 1.5 million patents. This was about 46% of the total patents. Out of the top 10 patent-filing countries, china alone has filed more patents than the other 9 countries. There is a huge difference in patent filing between china and the US. china applies for more than twice as many patents as the US. This year, china has filed 5.9% more patents than last year.


India is number 6

India ranks sixth in the world in filing patents. india has improved one position as compared to last year. germany has come down one place. india filed 61,573 patents this year. This is 8.5% more than last year. india also stood at the sixth position in terms of obtaining patents. india got 30,721 patents. This is 10 per cent more than last year. india is one of the few countries that have been able to grow in double digits in obtaining patents.

China has become a giant

It takes time to file and obtain a patent. For this reason, the patent filed and the patent obtained in a year cannot be compared. In the year 2021, 1.76 million patents were granted worldwide. china got the maximum number of 6,95,946 patents. America is the second number which got 3,27,307 patents. It was followed by japan (1,84,372) and Korea (1,45,882) and european (1,08,799).

India got 30,721 patents. india is followed by brazil (26,872), russia (23,662), canada (22,687) and germany (21,113). On the other hand, compared to last year, brazil has got 31.7% more patents. Countries showing double-digit growth include germany (22%) and india (16.5%).
