A man who opened a modest studio in adilabad and self-taught himself photography has since won over 165 honours, ranging from State-level to national and even international awards. A gold prize from the esteemed Photographic Society of America was given to Anil Kumar Deshpande for his recent photograph of the revered ayyappa Thiruvabharanam procession from sabarimala in Kerala.
Deshpande, an adilabad town native and the son of a farmer, passed his SSC on his second try. He is from Brahmaniwada. Nevertheless, he persisted in trying to succeed later in life, and after branching out into wedding photography, he has been dominating the industry for more than ten years now, making his parents, venkat rao and Kamala Bai, happy.
"I started taking photos to make a career after finishing intermediate. In 1988, I opened a studio in adilabad with the aid of the Gramodaya programme. Since then, I've been practising wedding photography. I sharpened my talents by participating in photography workshops. Deshpande stated to "Telangana Today" that she participates in worldwide webinars to learn more about the art.
The 53-year-old photographer has also grown fond of taking unguarded pictures of the sabarimala temple's many cultural and spiritual events. On May 12, he gained notoriety after his snapshot of the procession of Thiruvabharanam, a religious ceremony, won the PSA award in the field of photojournalism. He had turned in the assignment in January.

Deshpande is renowned for using images to educate the people about ayyappa Deeksha. For followers of ayyappa, he organised photography exhibitions in Bengaluru, Kuratla in the jagtial district, and Adilabad. He claimed that he spends two months a year camping in sabarimala and lengthier treks to record different levels of the Deeksha. He has received 165 honours to date, including 69 international, 81 national, and 15 state-level prizes. The Akhila Bharathiya ayyappa Dharma Prachar Sabha gave him an honour for spreading the ayyappa cause in 2021.
