China records 60000 Covid deaths...

Beijing: The first significant death toll revealed by the government since the relaxation of its viral restrictions in early december, China's health authorities on saturday announced around 60,000 Covid-related deaths in just over a month.

According to Jiao Yahui, head of the Bureau of Medical Administration under the National health Commission, china documented 59,938 Covid-related deaths between december 8, 2022, and january 12, this year. The actual number of deaths is probably higher because it only includes those that were reported to medical facilities.

It comprises 54,435 deaths from underlying conditions when paired with Covid and 5,503 deaths from respiratory failure caused directly by the virus said Jiao. Since suspending its zero-Covid policy in early december, china has been accused of underreporting the number of viral deaths that occur there.

Health officials emphasised on wednesday that focusing on the precise figure was "not necessary." beijing earlier changed the way it classifies Covid fatalities, declaring that it will only include individuals who expressly pass away from respiratory failure brought on by the virus. 

China's health officials said on saturday that the average age of individuals who passed away was 80.3 years old, with more than 90 percent of fatalities occurring after the age of 65. They claimed that most had underlying medical issues. In china, millions of adults over 60 have never had a vaccination.
