Hyderabad will be leading the nation in terms of waste-to-energy plants from the current capacity of 24 MW to 101 MW by december 2024, according to Municipal Administration and Urban Development minister KT Rama Rao, who emphasised the importance of public participation in government initiatives to help the State reach new heights.

In addition to this, he stated that by the end of August, hyderabad will be the only city in india to have 100% of its sewage treated. He made this statement while delivering the keynote speech at the World Environment Day 2023 event held at the Administrative Staff college of India. The minister said that there were 206 dry resource collecting centres (DRCC) with a daily capacity of 750 tonnes, 87 of which were run by SHG women and generated an annual income of about Rs 6.3 crore. According to him, the remaining 122 DRCCs' dry trash was being sorted, bailled, and sold to RDF and recycling facilities.

Bio-methanation Plant

The minister claimed that four bio-methanation plants (18.5TPD) (GHMC (5), GWMC (2.5), siddipet (10) and Siricilla (1)) were converting organic waste to valuable bio-gas, which was being used for cooking, and five ULBs — Suryapet, Medchal, Jawaharnagar, Kompally, and Dammaiguda — have scientific facilities for processing wet and dry waste.

Holy Waste Management

An programme called "Holy Waste" was launched as part of eco-friendly steps to recycle flower waste—about 6 tonnes per day—into useful items using a circular economy approach. This effort is being carried out in the temple towns of Vemulawada, Dharmapuri, Yadagirigutta, and Alair in collaboration with VAGMI Mahila Sangam and Oorvi Sustainable Solutions Pvt ltd.

Bio-miming of Legacy Waste in 128 ULBs

The minister said in a briefing on biomining policies enacted in the State that telangana was implementing a bio-mining project with Rs. 178.60 crore in 128 ULBs and 9 Clusters as part of sustainable waste management practises and resource recovery. This would be in favour of utilising precious land's potential in metropolitan settings.

Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant

He stressed the need of safe faecal sludge and septage management in creating livable urban environments and improving sanitation results, and stated FSTPs were being built in all 139 ULBs with a budget of Rs. 427.3 crores. Rama Rao stated, "The telangana government has taken a ground-breaking move, and we are the only State—along with Odisha—to have accomplished such a feat.

The government has approved the installation of roof top solar power plants with a 31.12 MW capacity at STPs, pump houses, reservoirs, and buildings of HMWSSB, the minister stated when outlining future plans.

He also said that an agreement would be reached between HMWSSB, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha university in New Delhi, Prof. Jayashankar Agriculture university of telangana, indian Institute of Rice Research, Sustainable india Trust, and others to study the extraction of nutrients from STP byproducts and to take steps to lessen the carbon footprint of STP operations.

For its accomplishments in a range of disciplines, hyderabad consistently received top rankings from many agencies and organisations. From 2015 through 2020, Mercer named it the Most Liveable City for a five-year period. According to him, telangana was named first for its overall performance in environmental activities by the Centre for Science and Environment on Sunday.
