Since 2016–17, telangana has continuously been among the top three States in terms of producing its own revenue and using it to pay for more than 70% of its costs. As a result, without substantially depending on the Centre and other revenue sources, the State manages its regular spending, such as wages and social services. However, the State has managed to rank among the States that get the smallest proportion of Central Taxes.
According to information provided in the rajya sabha by the Union Finance Ministry, Telangana's own earnings contributed significantly to the payment of its expenses from 2016–17 to 2022–23. State expenditures as a proportion of the State's own revenue were 71.46% in 2016–17, 77.32% in 2017–18, 77.30% in 2018–19, 68.90% in 2019–20, 59.05% in 2020–21, 74.78% in 2021–22, and 70.60% in 2022–23.

Tax revenue and non-tax revenue are also included in state revenue. Telangana's financial situation is sound as evidenced by the fact that more than 70% of its revenue expenditures are covered by its own income. telangana has been among the top-performing major States in the nation while experiencing the hurdles of the Covid-19 epidemic, according to a finance department official.

Telangana has largely competed with other major States like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and haryana for the top slot among the top five performing States having a higher share of their own revenue contributing to their respective revenue expenditure over the last seven financial years, according to reports by the reserve bank of india on "State Finances: A Study of Budgets for 2022-23."

When it comes to its part of the Central taxes, telangana has continued to rank worst among these performing States. From 14,876.61 crore in 2016–17 to Rs 13,990.13 crore in 2021–22, the State's portion of the Central taxes dropped. Additionally, the amount of taxes that were devolved from the federal government decreased dramatically, from 2.44 percent in 2018–19 to 2.10 percent in 2022–23.
