There are reports that singapore has decided to import electricity from India. Singapore's Energy Market Authority has said it welcomes the possibility of importing electricity from other countries in the region, including India. The Energy Market Authority has responded to a query on reports that india and singapore are trying to connect their power grids.
The Energy Market Authority has said it welcomes proposals to import 4 GW of power into singapore from regional countries including India. Bids are invited till december 29. After that, the companies that will import the electricity will be selected.
The Energy Market Authority also said it had received more than 20 proposals last May to import power from countries in the region. Earlier, it was reported that both india and singapore are planning to connect their electricity infrastructure through submarine cable through andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was also said to enable india to sell renewable energy to Singapore. A top official had said that an expert committee would look into such a move. The electricity market in singapore is plagued with instability due to severe price fluctuations. Therefore, alternative sources of electricity are required to ensure reliable and affordable power supply. For this, energy security is likely to be improved by importing electricity from other countries.
Singapore has already said it is exploring various options to expand renewable energy in the country, including regional grids, due to land shortages and solar power issues. andaman and nicobar islands also face power challenges. diesel production accounts for nearly 91 per cent of the total production capacity of the union territory comprising various islands. Reports say that the rest is generated by hydroelectricity and solar power. Therefore, the arrangement with singapore is likely to benefit andaman and nicobar islands connectivity, especially in terms of renewable energy.
