A previous nasa mission, the 1998 Lunar Prospector, found water ice in the shadow craters of the South Pole.

Why is water important on the moon?
Scientists are keen to detect pockets of water ice on the Moon. If detected, it will be useful for experiments about lunar volcanoes and asteroids.
