As the world gradually recovers from the Corona virus, scientists and world leaders are beginning to focus on the mysterious and potentially deadly threat of Disease X. This hypothetical pathogen represents a stand-in for any new, unexpected infectious disease that may lead to future epidemics.
The World health Organization (WHO) has listed Disease X alongside other high-priority diseases such as Ebola and the Zika virus in its awareness campaigns.
What is Disease X?
The term was coined to prompt the international community to prepare for the possibility of a pathogen that could be more devastating than Covid-19, which has claimed millions of lives and disrupted economies worldwide. World leaders, including World health Organization chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, are to discuss strategies to deal with Disease X at the World Economic Forum in Davos, switzerland this week.
The session titled “Preparing for Disease X” aims to explore the innovative initiatives needed to prepare health systems for multiple challenges and prevent the collapse of national health infrastructures during the 2020 crisis.
