In january 2019, prime minister Modi laid the foundation stone for setting up AIIMS Hospital on 222 acres in Dhoppur, madurai district. For this, an agreement was signed with a Japanese financial company called JICA for the year 2021 at an estimate of Rs.1977.8 crore. JICA will lend 82% of the total valuation i.e. Rs.1627.70 crore. The central government has to provide the rest of the funds.
Accordingly, the construction work which had started stopped with the perimeter wall. No work has been done for 5 years. A practical class was planned to be held at Tirumangalam government Hospital for madurai AIIMS students studying at Ramanathapuram Medical College. For this purpose, the work of providing facilities including hostel and classrooms is going on.
After a long time, L&T started the construction work of AIIMS madurai Hospital on 4th March. The site where AIIMS Hospital is situated was leveled and Vastu Puja was performed. Subsequently, it was announced that the construction work should be completed within 33 months.
