India’s External Affairs minister S. jaishankar commented on former bangladesh Prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s continued stay in India.
He stated that there is no fixed deadline for her stay; it depends on the circumstances under which she arrived in august last year.
Her arrival followed violent student protests and the collapse of her government.
Jaishankar said the decision on how long she remains in india ultimately depends on Hasina herself.
⚖️ Extradition Demand from Bangladesh
On 17 November, a bangladesh tribunal court sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death.
She was convicted of alleged “crimes against humanity” during the 2024 student uprising.
Former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal also received a death sentence in the same case.
Former Inspector General of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was sentenced to five years in prison after cooperating and pleading guilty.
Following the verdict, Dhaka formally requested india to extradite both Hasina and Kamal under the India–Bangladesh extradition treaty.
Bangladesh claimed that New delhi is legally bound to return them.
🔁 Hasina’s Response to the Verdict
Sheikh Hasina rejected the charges, calling the ruling “rigged”, “politically motivated”, and issued by a “kangaroo court.”
She insisted that the case was driven by political vendetta, not justice.
🇮🇳 India’s Position
India stated that it had taken note of the verdict.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasised that india remains committed to the best interests of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion, and stability.
Jaishankar refrained from commenting directly on extradition, maintaining a cautious diplomatic stance.
