Nomination Announcement

On Saturday, august 30, 2025, the telangana Cabinet approved the nomination of Mohammad Azharuddin, former indian cricket captain and congress leader, and professor M. Kodandaram to the telangana Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota.

Azharuddin’s Reaction

Expressed gratitude on social media, saying he felt “honoured and humbled”.

Thanked senior congress leaders mallikarjun Kharge, sonia gandhi, rahul Gandhi, priyanka Gandhi, and KC Venugopal for their trust.

Extended appreciation to chief minister A. revanth Reddy, deputy cm Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, tpcc chief Mahesh Goud, and telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan.

Promised to serve telangana with “integrity and dedication.”

Background of the Nomination

The decision follows a supreme court ruling earlier in august that struck down the previous nominations of Kodandaram and Amer ali Khan (news editor, The Siasat Daily).

Their earlier appointments were challenged by BRS leaders Dasoju sravan and Kurra Satyanarayana, whose own nominations in 2023 were rejected by then-Governor tamilisai soundararajan citing political affiliations.

In march 2024, the telangana High court set aside the Governor’s rejection but also invalidated the Cabinet’s choice of Kodandaram and Khan.

The supreme court later ruled that the two should not have been sworn in after the High Court’s verdict, creating the need for fresh nominations.

Political Significance

Azharuddin’s nomination gains attention as he was previously considered Congress’ candidate for the jubilee hills by-election, following the death of mla Maganti Gopinath.

He had earlier contested from the jubilee hills seat in the 2023 assembly elections but was defeated.

His entry into the Legislative Council is seen as both a recognition of his political role in telangana and a move to strengthen Congress’ presence in the state.
