Amber Heard revealed the first details about Mera's role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom during her recent testimony in the civil trial involving her and johnny Depp. Heard said that Warner Bros. was on the verge of removing her from the Aquaman sequel entirely, and that she had to battle hard to stay on. Heard also claimed that script rewrites were removing more and more of her planned moments as Mera, highlighting the loss of action and battle sequences in particular.

Heard claims that the footage she shot for Aquaman 2 was a drastically reduced version of Mera's role in the original script. Heard also testified that while she had shot the aforementioned pared-down Mera character for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, she wasn't sure if she would make the final cut in subsequent testimony provided during the johnny depp vs. Amber Heard defamation trial. Given the postponement of Aquaman 2 until 2023, the final edit will most likely take some time.

Heard detailed the terms of her contract with Warner Bros. and DC, providing a rare firsthand look into such matters from one of the parties involved. Heard announced that she had been released from her contract with the company before of the production of Aquaman 2. It's crucial to note, however, that Heard's Warner Bros. contract expiration is unrelated to her public feuds with ex-husband Depp. On the witness stand, Heard revealed that her first contract included three films as Mera: Justice League (as well as a British-accented version in Zack Snyder's version), Aquaman, and Aquaman 2.

Even though Heard had to struggle to stay in Aquaman 2, her DCEU contract was finally completed by her work on the sequel. However, Warner Bros.' choice not to sign Heard to a new contract for future DC appearances after Aquaman 2, which they might have done, could be linked to her personal controversies.
