Venkataramana joined the YSRC immediately after it was established. He served as a congress mla from the prathipadu assembly constituency between 2004 and 2009.

On a YSRCP ticket, he ran unsuccessfully for the Ponnuru assembly seat in 2014. He was defeated by telugu desam party candidate dhulipala Narendra. However, Kilaru Rosaiah, the son-in-law of senior leader and MLC Ummareddy Venkateshwarlu, won the party ticket in 2019 instead of Venkataramana. Rosaiah secured the position with a big majority.
