Goa Liberation Day honours the day the state finally emancipated itself from Portuguese hegemony.

The capital of the state of goa, which is bordered by the states of maharashtra and Karnataka, is Panaji. After being liberated from Portuguese rule, it joined india and received statehood from the government in 1987.

Goa had been under Portuguese domination for almost 450 years on august 15, 1947, when india attained freedom. It was around this time that the Portuguese began to colonise some of india and shown their steadfast control over goa and other indian areas, even after india gained independence from the British.

Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru called for military involvement after many diplomatic and negotiating attempts with the authorities had failed. The indian armed troops were ordered to strike under the name "Operation Vijay," which means "Victory." The Portuguese gave up within 36 to 40 hours, and on december 19, 1961, the coastal state was freed. Major General K P Candeth, who was eventually chosen as the military governor of goa, oversaw the entire operation.Goa Liberation Day 2022 was established in this manner.
