Movies have started to address how social media influencers have affected people as a part of greater popular culture, probably most notably in the black comedy Ingrid Goes West. The writer-director Quinn Shephard's latest film, Not Okay, is a black comedy that centers on a single character who values popularity as an influencer above all else, much to her own cost. In Not Okay, a sharp and hilarious satire of social media influencers and stardom, Zoey Deutch excels as the (mainly) unlikeable lead.

Aiming to please Colin (Dylan O'Brien), the person she likes, Danni Sanders (Deutch), an aspiring writer and social media influencer, tells him she's been accepted into a writer's retreat in Paris. Danni employs artistic photo editing to post pictures on social media that appear to show her actually in europe rather than coming clean about the hoax. However, Danni's lying becomes more problematic when a terrorist incident occurs in Paris. She keeps up the lie rather than telling her loved ones that she was never actually in Paris. As it spirals out of control, Danni meets Rowan (Mia Isaac), a young activist working for gun reform, at a support group for people who have endured catastrophic incidents.

As a result, Zoey Deutch and Mia Isaac's performances in Not Okay are crucial, and both actresses do an excellent job of bringing their characters to life. Deutch portrays the tone-deaf and unlikeable Danni with just the right amount of charm so that, even if the audience doesn't immediately identify with her character, they will feel sorry for her loneliness. Even though it soon becomes evident that they don't see social media in the same way, it's understandable why Danni would be drawn to Isaac as the more grounded Rowan since he exudes charisma. Additionally, the supporting cast is excellent, especially Dylan O'Brien and Nadia Alexander.

In the end, Not Okay is undoubtedly worthwhile seeing for anyone drawn to the subject or a lover of any of the performers involved. While Isaac thrives as Rowan's foil and O'Brien adds lots of fun as Colin, Deutch is endearing and captivating as Danni. In Not Okay, there is a lot of embarrassing comedy, and the actors all do a good job of pulling it off. The enjoyable social media black comedy from Shephard might make viewers reflect on their own use of social media.
