Three Thousand Years of Longing, which is based on A.S. Byatt's "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye," tells the tale of Dr. Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton), a narratologist who travels to Istanbul for a symposium on storytelling throughout history. She encounters a Djinn (Idris Elba) after unintentionally opening a decorative bottle she bought at the market. Alithea must grant three wishes, which is all the Djinn asks of her. She does not, however, have faith that this is not all some bizarre ruse. Alithea is concerned that this Djinn is some sort of trickster because she has read about them in books. The Djinn then starts telling her tales from his history, dating all the way back to his interactions with king Solomon and the queen of Sheba.
Grand and fanciful, Three Thousand Years of Longing is also lovely and personal. The Djinn and Alithea's experiences are expertly dissected by Miller and Gore, who take their time to delve into each character's past, present, and—in Alithea's case—the passion and emotion she finds in storytelling. It's about knowing one's own wishes, discerning Alithea's desires in spite of her denials, and appreciating the prudence and wariness with which she and the Djinn may approach circumstances. The narrative's dive into historical tales, some of which are delivered with a small twist, serves as an illustration of how vivid, enduring, and potent stories may be in the movie.
Despite its apparent simplicity, Miller's movie has a tonne of complexity and nuance. The movie will leave viewers with a lot of questions, and a second or third viewing is necessary to completely comprehend all of the levels of the plot. john Seale's stunning cinematography brilliantly portrays the fairy-tale-like quality of the movie as well as the fanciful components that are woven into the historical. The story of Three Thousand Years of Longing should stick with viewers for a very long time because it is the kind of movie that one doesn't immediately forget after watching.
