In 1988, when World aids Day was celebrated, it was estimated that 90,000 to 1,50,000 people were hiv positive. Since the beginning of this epidemic, about 84.2 million people have been infected with the hiv virus and about 40.1 million people have died of HIV. Till 1996, WHO organized many events annually regarding World aids Day. After that the United Nations agency UNAIDS took these responsibilities in their hands. UNAIDS also established the World aids Campaign (WAC) in 1997 to raise awareness about aids and to collect aids information worldwide.

Significance of World aids Day

World aids Day is important because it is a reminder to the public and the government that hiv is still a serious problem that needs to be done to raise awareness, raise money for those affected by the disease, and to make better choices for them.
