Chennai Corporation is maintaining 2.90 lakh street lights in 15 zones. Various types of lighting such as street lights on bus routes, street lights on internal roads, park lights, high tower lights are maintained by the chennai Corporation. Most of these lights are LED lights. This saves electricity bill for chennai Corporation.

In this case, the chennai Corporation is currently carrying out the work of installing street lights in various places in Chennai. Along with this, the chennai Corporation is taking steps to refurbish and use the old street lights. Corporation officials said, "The work of converting sodium lamps to LED lamps in chennai Corporation started in 2013. Since then, the old sodium lamps have been continuously converted to LED lamps.

New LED lights have been installed at various places. Thus, the warranty of the LED lights purchased last year 2013 is 7 years. In these 7 years, if there is any problem with these lamps, the companies will repair them. After completion of 7 years, the corporation should repair the problem lights.

According to this, if there is any minor problem with the street lights, the corporation will buy the spare part and fix it. If more than one problem occurs, it is decided to refurbish it and use it. In the first phase, 2 thousand street lights have been sent for refurbishing.

By doing this, the cost of purchasing new street lights is also reduced. Also the lifespan of a street lamp is increasing. chennai Corporation is the corporation that is going to undertake the refurbishing work for the first time," they said.
