Having just finished college, Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) returns home to Palmera City to begin the next chapter of his life. Jaime and his slightly younger sister Milagro Reyes (Belissa Escobedo) get a job as cleaners for victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), a rich scheming billionaire, in one of her estates. They soon get fired for their antics but not before they meet Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), who offers Jaime a job if he shows up at a certain time at Kord Industry’s headquarters in the city.  
Jaime’s life is forever changed the next day as Jenny Kord finds herself in a life-or-death situation that leads her to entrust him with a Big Belly burger box containing an ancient scarab with alien biotechnology. As he reveals the scarab to his family, the device seemingly attacks him and instantly takes over his body. The scarab chooses him to be its host and they are symbiotically linked, sealing their new bond as eternal. Using the powers bestowed upon him by Khaji-Da (global pop star Becky G) – the entity that lives inside and controls the scarab – Jaime becomes the next incarnation of the Blue Beetle in an attempt to stop victoria Kord’s dangerous plans for the future of Palmera City and the world.
The Blue Beetle cast as a whole has strong chemistry. Every member of the Reyes family, including Jaime's controlling mother Rocio, played by Elpidia Carrillo, contributes something unique to the table. Rudy, played by George Lopez, is Jaime's uncle, and he steals the show. Rudy Reyes is a comical, eccentric man who is totally dedicated to helping his nephew become a superhero Palmera City can look up to. It is a pure delight to watch Xolo Mariduea and Lopez together. Everyone will adore Adriana Barraza's wry performance as Jaime's grandma Nana, the family's devoted but gun-toting matriarch with a revolutionary past. Adriana Barraza is instantly recognizable in the role. Damián Alcázar, who plays the adoring father of Milagro and Jaime, Alberto Reyes, is the one who brings the tears to the audience's eyes.
The major antagonist victoria Kord is where Blue Beetle starts to go apart. Susan Sarandon is quite unconvincing in this scene; her interactions and line delivery are largely robotic. Beyond the incredible technology at her disposal, she never really strikes me as a threat. Conrad Carapax (Raoul Max Trujillo), Kord's right-hand man, is the secondary antagonist, and his setup is as uninteresting. In a lot of superhero movies, the antagonist is frequently one-dimensional, and Blue Beetle is no exception. Sarandon is nothing more than a story gadget who can move around and talk.
A fantastic, foot-tapping soundtrack, featuring a wide range of well-known Latin American hits, both recent and classic, is another highlight of Blue Beetle. Compared to other previous superhero movies, Blue Beetle's action scenes are all more hyper-realistic and use practical hand-to-hand combat. This increases Blue Beetle's level of adrenaline. Every blow on the face hurts. For Jaime Reyes and his family, there is actual risk, and the stakes are always high.
The film Blue Beetle has its problems, but it overcomes them by having a strong core group of characters and spotlighting the aspects of Latino culture that bring Jaime's family together. Without question, Xolo Mariduea is a rising talent who excels in the role of Blue Beetle. He was made for the role and gives a warm and endearing performance.


One of the best live-action DC superhero debuts in recent memory, the film provides an endearing picture of strong family ties.
