The judge then asked the registrar to present the case to the CJI for an urgent hearing. The hearing is anticipated to take place on friday (the supreme Court's last working day this week). Govindhbhai Nai, one of the convicted, stated in his plea that he was solely responsible for caring for his 88-year-old father and 75-year-old mother.
Nai stated that his father was an elderly guy suffering from asthma who was in terrible condition after recently undergoing surgery, including an angiography, and was set for another procedure to cure haemorrhoids.
In his application, Nai cited his excellent behaviour, stating, "During the period of release, I had committed no infraction of law whatsoever and had followed the conditions of the order of remission in letter and spirit."
Another inmate, Ramesh Rupabhai Chandana, requested a six-week extension, stating that he needed time to plan his son's wedding.
Mitesh Chimanlal Bhat, the third inmate, also asked a six-week extension, noting that his winter product is ready for harvest, and he would want to accomplish this duty before surrendering.
Notably, on january 8, the supreme court overturned the state's judgement to free 11 individuals convicted of raping Bilkis Bano and murdering seven of her family members during the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat.
The court concluded that the gujarat government was "not competent enough" to issue such an order, labelling the move a "fraud act".
The 11 criminals were freed on august 15, 2022, after serving 15 years in jail, with regard for their age and conduct while inside.
Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was gang-raped while fleeing the rioting that erupted in gujarat following the Godhra train fire event on march 3, 2002. Her three-year-old daughter was one of the seven family members slain.
