Senior congress officials, including party chairman mallikarjun Kharge, sonia gandhi, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, had stated that they would not attend the consecration ceremony since it was a "RSS/BJP event".
Shashi Tharoor stated that he will select his own time to go, adding, "It will most likely have nothing to do with politics since I go to temples to worship. I don't go into politics."
He went on to say that the congress never stated anything bad about hinduism or Lord ram, and that the consecration event was "politicised". He went on to say that attending the event would have meant being "complicit in the ruling party's political exercise".
"You have the Prime Minister, who is not a purohit, conducting the pran Pratishtha," Tharoor stated of the ceremony on january 22.
He also refuted the party's detractors' "anti-Hindu" charges, saying, "Suddenly saying that because we didn't come, we are anti-Hindu is absurd." Eighty percent of india is Hindu. Eighty percent of congress members are likewise Hindu.
We have no reason to believe that hinduism is characterised by participation in a BJP-organized activity starring the Prime Minister. I don't believe that is hinduism at all.
