For many of us on CBM, the big reveal that the asterisk that was added to the Thunderbolts* title shortly after the first trailer referred to "The New Avengers" probably wasn't shocking, but it would have been for the general public who weren't following the movie's rumors.  Because of this, it was considered rather puzzling that the film was formally rebranded as The New Avengers only three days after its theatrical debut.

It sounds like the marketing campaign was always going to start soon after the film came out, but some people think it started a little earlier than anticipated when the first weekend's box office results were released.

Director Jake Schreier tells The New York Times, "It felt like we could do that, too, if Val is also trying to pull a switcheroo and sell the New Avengers to the world."  "I hope it doesn't feel sweaty, especially since the asterisk has been on the film for a year. It seems like we built up to this plan."

The director went on to say, "It's very fun [Marvel was]open to embracing that."  This universe is really fascinating, and Kevin [Feige] occasionally discusses it. At times, they want things to leak, but they don't.  It will be interesting to watch what transpires because I believe we all anticipated it would already be a larger portion of the conversation.

As part of a new marketing campaign, Marvel Studios is only "spelling out the asterisk" rather than actually changing the film's title to The New Avengers.  Although it's unclear if it will be successful, the switch will undoubtedly give the movie a little more exposure as it enters its first week of release.
