Over Memorial Day weekend, the combined might of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch is breaking records. In the former, which is a live-action adaptation of the Disney animated film of the same name from 2002, the mischievous extraterrestrial Stitch (played by chris Sanders) escapes from captivity and crash lands in Hawai‘i, where latchkey kid Lilo (Maia Kealoha) befriends him. In the latter, which comes just after the conclusion of 2023's Dead Reckoning, tom Cruise's character Ethan Hunt and his team continue their efforts to prevent the planet from being destroyed by the rogue AI The Entity. It is the eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible film series.

According to Variety, as of sunday morning, Mission: Impossible is targeting a 3-day gross of $63 million and a 4-day gross of $77 million, while Lilo & Stitch is expected to make a 3-day opening weekend gross of $145.5 million and a 4-day holiday weekend total of $183 million at the American box office.  The record for the greatest Memorial Day weekend debut ever will be broken by Lilo & Stitch.  It has outperformed Top Gun: Maverick, another tom Cruise film, which made $126 million over three days and $160.5 million over four days in 2022.  The global total for that movie was $1.496 billion.

Lilo & Stitch is expected to surpass the domestic run of the original film, which brought in $145.8 million in North America, by the end of Monday.  With $24.8 million, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning achieved the best opening day in the eight-film series and is still on course to surpass Mission: Impossible - Fallout's $61 million three-day debut to set a new franchise record for the best opening weekend.

Together with the other films that are currently showing in theaters, such as Final Destination Bloodlines, Thunderbolts*, and Sinners, their combined strength is expected to generate over $322 million for the domestic box office over the weekend. This would make it the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend ever, surpassing the $314.3 million earned by the combined total of 2013's Fast & Furious 6, The Hangover Part III, Star Trek Into Darkness, and iron Man 3.  Read the following statement from Michael O'Leary, President and CEO of cinema United, regarding the record:
