US President donald trump said that Chicago could be the next city where the federal government may take action to stop crime. Earlier, the government had been taking similar action in Washington for a few days. According to the news agency Xinhua, speaking to reporters in the white house Oval Office, trump claimed that Washington, DC is becoming "one of the safest cities in the world". He also indicated that his administration will turn to other cities to deal with crime, homelessness, and illegal migration.



"Chicago will be our next city after this," the president said. When trump announced at a white house press conference on august 11 that he was deploying the National Guard to help restore law and order and public safety in Washington, he also named Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore, and Oakland as troubled cities. All of these are Democratic-led cities. A release issued by the Joint Task Force-DC on Thursday said that more than 1,900 troops have been called from several states, including West Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Ohio, Louisiana, and Tennessee National Guard, under this mission.


Trump meets National Guard soldiers

Trump met law enforcement officials and National Guard personnel in southeast Washington on thursday (August 21, 2025) and reiterated his pledge to launch similar crime suppression campaigns in other cities. CNN quoted a US defense official on friday as saying that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered National Guard members patrolling the streets of Washington to carry their service weapons. Hegseth's instructions are different from the Pentagon's previous guidelines. The Pentagon had earlier said that National Guard members could be given weapons if the situation required.
