Hindi-Tamil language Row: kanimozhi Criticizes Centre's language Policy
DMK mp kanimozhi strongly criticized the central government's language policy, particularly the promotion of hindi and sanskrit over regional languages like Tamil.
She emphasized that tamil is an ancient, living, and widely spoken language, whereas sanskrit is not commonly spoken, yet receives disproportionate funding from the Centre.
Kanimozhi accused the Centre of neglecting tamil and other regional languages by favoring Sanskrit promotion, questioning the rationale behind such funding decisions.
She warned that promoting a language like hindi over the native language of a region could endanger the local culture and traditions.
Citing Maharashtra, she noted that the growing influence of hindi has led to a decline in the importance of Marathi, a situation tamil Nadu has actively resisted.
Recalling history, kanimozhi stated that attempts to impose hindi in tamil Nadu have always failed due to massive public protests and resistance.
She credited the people’s struggle for preserving the tamil language, culture, and traditions to this day.
Taking a dig at Union minister Anurag Thakur, kanimozhi sarcastically commented on historical distortions, saying some leaders might claim folklore figures like Hanuman reached the moon before Neil Armstrong.
She praised tamil Nadu's education system for being fact- and logic-based, unlike what she suggests is happening in some northern states.
Highlighting tamil values, she said Tamils never had a dominating mindset, even in ancient times when tamil warriors conquered lands—they respected local people and their culture.
Her remarks come amid ongoing national debates over linguistic identity, with tamil Nadu consistently opposing Hindi imposition, making it a key political and cultural issue in the state.
