India has signed a new trade agreement with the United States that Commerce and industry minister piyush goyal described as stronger and more favourable than those secured by neighbouring countries.
The deal is being positioned as balanced, forward-looking, and agriculture-centric, with a strong focus on protecting indian farmers.
Our Deal Is Better Than Neighbours’
Addressing reporters, Goyal stated that india negotiated more advantageous terms compared to surrounding nations.
He said the agreement reflects India’s growing strength in global trade negotiations and its ability to safeguard national interests.
According to Goyal, the deal ensures lower tariffs, improved market access, and fairer trade conditions for indian exporters.
Agriculture at the Core of the Agreement
Goyal emphasised that agriculture was placed at the heart of the negotiations.
The pact is expected to open new opportunities for indian agricultural produce in the US market.
At the same time, safeguards have been built in to protect domestic farmers from unfair competition and import surges.
The government believes the deal will help increase farmers’ income, boost exports, and strengthen rural livelihoods.
Praise for Leadership
Goyal credited prime minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for ensuring farmers’ concerns were prioritised throughout the negotiations.
He also thanked US President donald trump for what he termed a constructive and cooperative engagement process.
The minister said the agreement marks a new chapter in India–US economic relations, strengthening long-term trade ties.
Attack on the Opposition
Goyal criticised opposition parties, alleging they had ignored national and agricultural interests when in power.
He claimed the current government had reversed that approach by making agriculture a central pillar of economic diplomacy.
Broader Significance
The trade deal is not limited to commerce alone but is aimed at strengthening rural india and ensuring food security.
Goyal concluded that the agreement would deliver tangible benefits to millions of indians dependent on farming for their livelihood
