India’s WTC Qualification Race Is Turning Into a Nightmare

India have won, but the bigger battle has only just begun—and the road to the World Test Championship final is suddenly looking brutally unforgiving.

  1. Those 12 points are massive, but hardly enough. India’s latest victory keeps the campaign alive, yet the points table leaves absolutely no room for complacency. A 2-0 series victory against Sri Lanka would push India’s PCT to 57.58%, giving them a much-needed boost in the qualification race.

  2. Bangladesh could be pushed aside. India will also be watching Australia’s result against Bangladesh closely. If Australia win, Bangladesh could fall to 55.56%, allowing India to climb into fourth place and Bangladesh to slip to fifth. But fourth place is nowhere near safety.

  3. New Zealand is the next trap. India’s next challenge is a two-Test series against New Zealand. Every dropped point from here could come back to haunt them because the margin for error is shrinking rapidly.

  4. Then comes the monster: Australia. A five-Test series against Australia at home will be the defining stretch. India have only nine Tests remaining in this WTC cycle, meaning every match now carries enormous weight.

  5. Seven wins may be the bare minimum. If India somehow win seven of those nine Tests and lose two, their PCT would rise to around 62.96%. Eight wins and one defeat would take them to 68.52%—a far healthier position, but even that may not guarantee qualification.

  6. The numbers are savage. In the previous cycle, the finalists finished on 69.44% and 67.54%. That benchmark tells the real story: India probably need an extraordinary finish, not merely a good one.

The brutal reality? India are still alive, but the qualification door is getting narrower with each Test. From here, every draw hurts, every defeat could be fatal, and there is almost zero room for error.
