The problem of diabetes is being reported to be increasing rapidly globally. According to World health Organization (WHO) statistics, there are more than 430 million patients of this serious health problem worldwide, every year this disease causes more than 1.5 million deaths. diabetes is generally considered to be mainly of two types – Type-1 and Type-2, although along with this, health experts also advise people to be cautious about prediabetes, the initial level of diabetes. people with prediabetes have a higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes in the future.

As endocrinologist Dr Altamash Sheikh explains, prediabetes means your blood sugar level is higher than normal, although it is not considered high enough to lead to type-2 diabetes. If after the diagnosis of prediabetes, its prevention such as lifestyle changes, diet and exercise are taken care of, then the subsequent stages of diabetes and its severity can be prevented. If you have prediabetes, you may still have long-term risks from diabetes—especially heart, blood vessel, and kidney problems.
Let us know how prediabetes can be detected and what are the things that need to be kept in mind to prevent it?Doctors say that no specific symptoms or signs are usually seen in prediabetes. Some people may notice signs of darkening of the skin in certain parts of the body. However, there are some symptoms that may indicate that your prediabetic problem may turn into type-2 diabetes.
increased thirst or frequent urination
Fatigue-weakness.
Blurred vision
Numbness or tingling in the feet or hands.
Prone to frequent infections, especially UTIs.
No quick healing of wounds.
Experts do not yet know the exact reason why prediabetes occurs. Genetics is believed to play an important role in this. The body gets most of the glucose from food. With the digestion of food, the amount of glucose obtained from it enters the bloodstream. Here the insulin hormone has a special role, which allows sugar to enter the cells, from which the body receives the necessary energy.

In the condition of diabetes or prediabetes, the production of insulin is affected, due to which glucose is not used properly as energy and it increases in the blood. Problems like overweight, dietary disturbances, physical inactivity can cause prediabetes.
The American diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that everyone over the age of 45 be screened for diabetes. Dr. Vigyan Mishra (Lab Specialist) says, Diabetes/prediabetes risks can be detected through blood tests. It is easy to detect through glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C test). Between 5.7%-6.4% are diagnosed with prediabetes and 6.5% or more are considered to have diabetes.
Apart from this, continuous blood sugar level of 100-130 in the morning on an empty stomach can be a sign of prediabetes. Oral glucose tolerance test is also done to confirm this.Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help in normalizing blood sugar levels. In prediabetes, taking care of lifestyle and diet is considered to be its treatment. diabetes can be controlled by avoiding fat and calorie items along with consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains. Apart from this, controlling the weight is considered most important. During the test, if you are found to have a high risk of diabetes, then the doctor may also recommend some medicines on the basis of that.

Dr. Altamash says, people with prediabetes do not necessarily have type-2 diabetes, but its risk definitely increases. For this reason, all people should keep taking preventive measures.
