Although Kovalam is a major tourist destination in the state with thousands of foreigners coming in, it still has many shortcomings. But now the government has formulated a big plan for the development of Kovalam. The development plan of Kovalam and its associated beaches aims to expand infrastructure to attract more tourists to Kovalam. The project is part of the activities aimed at making kerala a tourism hub.

The cabinet has approved a special plan to renovate South India's most important beach, Kovalam and its associated beaches and ensure coastal protection. Kovalam is the first tourist destination to mark kerala on the world tourism map. The need to implement a comprehensive development plan to raise the glory of Kovalam, which is in crisis due to the covid crisis and the sea attack, is being implemented through the new plan. Kovalam and its associated beaches are being renovated in two phases at a cost of Rupees 93 crore under the Kifbi project.

Infrastructure development at Hawwa beach and Lighthouse beach, renovation of Silent Valley sun Bath Park, Corporation land development, transportation facility to Corporation land, development of transportation facility to IB beach, demarcation of IB beach and Adilathura beach, acquisition of coconut plantation land will be implemented in the first phase. Further development of IB beach and Adilathura beach and coconut plantation development will be implemented as part of the second phase of the project. 

Tourism minister P.A. said that the development of Kovalam will revive the tourism sector of Kerala. Muhammad Riaz said. Immediately after taking charge of the tourism department, he visited Kovalam beach on May 26, 2021 and then took steps to carry out the maintenance of the beach. A meeting was held on 26 July 2021 reviewing the future development activities of Kovalam Beach. The minister said that the plan was formulated accordingly. Necessary arrangements will be made.
