The news that Godzilla vs Kong 2 is in the works has sparked conjecture as to what the plot would involve. The news of a new instalment in the franchise came from an Australian government body, which announced that a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel would begin filming later this year. If this is correct, Godzilla or Kong (or both) could make a comeback as early as 2023.

Since the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, there have been rumours that Legendary's MonsterVerse may have come to an end. While the film was a nice surprise at the box office in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, the lack of announcements left a lot of people wondering about the franchise's future. Since Godzilla: king of the Monsters was a financial flop for the company, there was speculation that Legendary and Warner Bros. would opt out of any further films. However, the Titans' chances of returning to theatres are improving by the day.

Legendary appears to be working on a new Godzilla and Kong film, in addition to a Skull Island anime on Netflix and a live-action MonsterVerse show on apple TV+. For the time being, it's being referred to as a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, implying that both monsters will return. That hasn't been confirmed, so the film could yet end up being a standalone on one of the two Titans from the last film. There are various narratives that the MonsterVerse sequel might explore in terms of what it will be about.
