In 2023, the dream of obtaining US citizenship became a reality for 59,000 indians, marking a significant milestone. The recent 'American Citizenship – 2023' report from the State Department reveals that indians secured the second spot among foreigners granted US citizenship last year. The fiscal year ending september 30, 2023, witnessed the naturalization of over 1.1 million individuals, with Mexicans leading the list at more than 1.1 million citizens.

Following closely, indians accounted for 6.7 percent of the total, reflecting the aspirations of many to establish themselves in the United States. To become a US citizen, applicants must meet qualifications outlined in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). These include a minimum of five years as a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), with additional considerations for those married to US citizens or in military service. 


Notably, individuals marrying US citizens are eligible for citizenship after three years. The report highlights that the majority of those granted US citizenship in fiscal year 2023 qualified through five years of legal residence.


After Mexicans and indians, Filipinos secured the third-highest number of US citizenships, with 44,800 individuals (5.1 percent) obtaining this status. The philippines was followed by the Dominican Republic, contributing 35,200 citizens (4 percent) to the overall tally. The statistics underscore the enduring appeal of the united states as a destination for those seeking new opportunities, with thousands realizing their dream of US citizenship each year.
