Today, more than 5 lakh workers in Tirupur are on a full-scale strike in protest of rising yarn costs. Tirupur manufactures more than 70% of the knitwear produced in tamil Nadu. The price of yarn, the primary raw material for knitwear manufacture, has grown dramatically in the last year, from Rs 120 to Rs 150, putting the price at Rs 300 to Rs 350.

As a result, the knitting industry and 117 allied organizations announced a complete blockade today, pushing the central government to take no action to restrict the rise in yarn costs, despite the fact that the knitting business is facing massive losses. They also demand that the tamil Nadu government should intervene and ask their requests and finally make a decision and so far, no ministers have visited their protests or that area around.

As a result, millions of knitwear and related businesses in Tirupur are closed today. Furthermore, they are on a hunger strike against the corporation office in order to emphasise their demands. The total number of people engaging in the roadblock is about 5 lakh. A trading loss of over Rs 200 crore has resulted as a result of this.
