The bharatiya janata party (BJP) government in gujarat on friday passed a bill in the assembly to reserve 27
percent seats for Other backward classes (OBC) in local bodies like Panchayat, Municipality and Municipal
Corporation. The gujarat local Authorities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed by voice vote. At the same
time, all the 17 MLAs of the party including congress Legislature party leader amit Chavda walked out of the
House demanding more reservation.
OBC reservation in gujarat was 10 percent
The bharatiya janata party government in gujarat on august 29 announced 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in
local bodies like panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations based on a report submitted by a
commission led by former supreme court judge KS Javeri. Was.
Earlier, OBC reservation in local bodies in gujarat was 10 percent.
The opposition congress alleged that the state government was doing "injustice" by giving only 27 percent
reservation, whereas it could have given more reservation. At the same time, the Craigens members demanded
that instead of the uniform ratio of 27 percent applicable to all the local bodies of the state, unit-wise reservation
should be declared in proportion to the OBC population in these units like district Panchayat and Municipal
Corporation.
