Heavy rains continue to lash chennai on thursday flooding several low-lying areas in the tamil Nadu capital. The coastal city will see intense rain along with thunderstorm and lightening today (November 30), according to india Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has issued moderate rain and thunderstorm warning for chennai, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Pudukottai and 12 other districts for the next three hours.

As per the met department, a low-pressure system over the andaman Sea has moved towards the Bay of bengal and is likely to develop into a depression. Isolated heavy rain is forecasted for the coastal and adjoining districts. In view of the heavy rains in chennai, schools have been closed today on Thursday. All schools, colleges, and other educational institutes will also remain shut in the Thiruvallur district, while schools will also remain shut in Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and kanchipuram districts as well.

The exams scheduled to be held today at chennai University also stands postponed. The varsity has yet to announce a new date for the exam. The MeT said the well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Bay of bengal is likely to intensify into a depression over the same region during the next 24 hours and further into a cyclonic storm over southwest Bay of bengal around Dec 3. “The well-marked low-pressure area is still continuing. It is expected to concentrate into a depression and move in the west-northwest direction during the next 24 hours and around december 3 it will intensify into a cyclonic storm… tamil Nadu has received very good rainfall in the last 24 hours, especially in the northern region. Heavy rainfall was recorded at about 59 places. Very heavy rainfall was recorded at 16 places. So, generally moderate rainfall is likely for the next 4 to 5 days…” said S Balachandran, deputy-director general of meteorology in Chennai.
