Rekha Gupta government strict on arbitrary fee hike!
The delhi government has taken a tough stand on the arbitrary and haphazard fee hike of private recognized non-aided schools in the capital Delhi. The Directorate of education was constantly receiving complaints from students and parents that many schools are increasing fees arbitrarily without any rules, which is putting a heavy financial burden on the parents. Taking these complaints seriously, the Directorate of education has constituted inspection committees at the district level. These committees are headed by the SDM of the concerned area and are accompanied by the Deputy director of education of the district and zone, Accounts Officer and Principals of government schools. Their job is to conduct physical inspection of all private schools, especially those schools against which complaints have been lodged.
Inspection of more than 600 schools so far
More than 600 private schools in delhi have been inspected till april 16, 2025 and the investigation of the remaining schools is going on rapidly. Strict action is being initiated against schools where fee hike is found to be arbitrary and which are accused of profit making or commercialization. The Directorate of education has so far issued show cause notices to more than 10 schools under Section 24(3) of the delhi school education Act (DSEAR), 1973. In some cases, the process of cancelling the recognition of the school or taking control of the management has also been initiated.
Many private schools did not submit audit reports
The inspection also revealed that many private schools are neither filing their fee statements on time nor audit reports, which is mandatory under the law. Apart from this, complaints of dummy schooling in schools have also come to light. So far, 20 such schools have been identified and action has also been initiated against them. The education department has also ensured that it is the legal responsibility of all schools to provide free books, uniforms and stationery to economically weaker section (EWS), disadvantaged group (DG) and differently abled students (CWSN). Schools that do not follow these rules will be prosecuted under the RTE Act, 2009 and DSEAR, 1973.
