The Plastic Waste Management Unit (PMWU) of Supaul district is writing a new story of women empowerment and livelihood with scientific management of waste. These units operating in Basantpur, Chhatapur, Kishanpur and Pipra blocks have now emerged as a new symbol of "earning from waste" and "employment from environment". The operation of these units is in the hands of the sisters of the Jeevika group. Jeevika Didi is now processing plastic with machines and delivering it to the market.

PMWU has so far collected a total of 56,135 kg of plastic waste. After successfully processing 42,066 kg of waste, 41,011 kg of waste was sold to various recycling agencies. Revenue of Rs 2,10,622 has also been received from the sale so far. The 'Art Park' located in Pipra has become the center of attraction for artworks made from plastic waste. In bihar, waste is now being used to generate both art and income. A Jeevika Didi emotionally tells, "PMWU cleaned our village, also gave us employment and self-respect. Now we are earning from waste."

Initiatives of the district administration and the government

The district administration and the state government have also turned the challenge of market linkage into an opportunity. By encouraging local startup plants, it has been ensured that direct access to recycling agencies is ensured. The effort has been considered a step towards zero plastic emission. The concept of sustainable development in villages has also strengthened. Supaul's PMWU model has now gone beyond the boundaries of bihar and has become an example across the country.

Opportunity for women to earn from waste

Chief minister Nitish Kumar's effort shows that positive political will, women's participation and environmental thinking together can create a new definition of development and cleanliness. The initiative of the bihar government has solved the problem of waste and created an opportunity for employment, respect and cleanliness.
