One of the biggest political transformations in modern india hasn’t just happened through elections, speeches, or parliamentary battles.
It happened through perception.
Over the last decade, narendra modi and the bharatiya janata party have successfully pushed a powerful narrative across large sections of the country: that the indian national congress is disconnected from Hindu sentiment and weak on nationalism.
And whether people agree with that perception or not, the uncomfortable truth for congress is this:
A huge number of voters now believe it.
That is the real crisis.
Because once a political narrative emotionally settles into public consciousness, facts alone are rarely enough to reverse it. congress today faces a situation that would have sounded unimaginable decades ago — the same party deeply tied to India’s freedom movement is now regularly accused of being “anti-Hindu” or even “anti-national” by political opponents and sections of the public.
What makes this even more damaging is that congress has struggled to counter the narrative effectively.
For years, the party often appeared reactive instead of assertive. While the bjp aggressively built a modern communication ecosystem powered by social media dominance, cultural messaging, nationalism, and emotional storytelling, congress frequently looked confused about its own identity and messaging strategy.
And politics today is no longer just about governance.
It’s about emotional connection.
Many voters don’t simply vote based on policies anymore. They vote based on trust, cultural belonging, national pride, and who they feel emotionally represents them. bjp understood that early. congress still seems to be catching up.
That doesn’t mean the narrative against congress is universally accepted or permanently fixed. Political perceptions can change. But they only change when parties aggressively rebuild public trust instead of assuming history alone will protect them.
Because in modern politics, legacy means very little if you lose the narrative war in the present.
