india has achieved a major milestone in terms of exporting iPhones to America. According to an estimate by research firm Omdia, iphone exports from india to America have jumped by 76 percent in the month of April. During this period, about 3 million units were shipped. That is, 3 million iPhones were sent from india to America in April.
On the contrary, iphone shipments from china to America have decreased by 76 percent to just 900,000 units. This is the first time that india has performed better than china in supplying iPhones to the American market. This is an important milestone in Apple's global manufacturing strategy.
Making iPhones in china has become expensive
In fact, in the month of april itself, US President donald trump imposed a 30 percent tariff on the export of iPhones made in China. While a tariff of 10 percent was imposed on imports from other countries including India.
Due to this 20 percent difference, the company started finding it expensive to make iPhones in china and the company started shifting its manufacturing base here, looking at india as an option. Tata Electronics, Foxconn and Pegatron make iPhones in our country. Focusing on many things like strong supply chain, low labor cost, government schemes, the company found it more economical to make iPhones in India.
india may face challenges
Earlier, apple CEO Tim Cook has also clearly said that most of the iPhones sold in the US during the june quarter will be made in India. However, experts believe that India's manufacturing capacity is growing rapidly. It is unlikely that it will be possible for india to meet the demand of about 2 crore iPhones every quarter in the US before 2026.
