US President
donald trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet on
friday (August 15, 2025). The two leaders are going to meet in Alaska, which was once a part of Russia. The proposed Trump-Putin meeting surprised everyone because till last week
trump was threatening that if
moscow did not end the
ukraine war by
august 8, he would impose additional sanctions on it.
Why is the meeting in Alaska a
victory for Putin?
Despite these threats, US President
trump agreed to a face-to-face meeting with Putin. Putin's meeting with
trump, despite facing diplomatic isolation, is also considered a big diplomatic
victory for Russia.
trump has invited him to American soil amid threats of
international boycott of Russia.
Zelensky will not attend the meeting
Apart from this,
trump also agreed to meet Putin without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This clearly means that the
ukraine ceasefire proposal will be discussed between the US and
russia without Ukrainian representation. This is being considered a big
victory for Putin because ever since
trump talked about meeting Putin, Zelensky has been saying that if no Ukrainian representative is present in the meeting, he will not accept the decision taken in this meeting. The biggest thing is that the place where the heads of state of the two countries are going to meet was selected by Putin himself.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit America at a time when an
arrest warrant has been issued against him by the
international Criminal
court (ICC). He has not visited any country since the ICC issued a warrant against Putin. In this regard, the visit to Alaska is also considered very important for Putin.
According to the report of Russian
news agency TASS, Putin will be the first Russian President to visit Alaska. Alaska is located on the northwestern tip of the North American continent and is the largest state in the US in terms of area, accounting for 18 percent of the total area. The shortest distance between
russia and Alaska is about 55 miles (88 km).
