Nepal Interim government Update: Sushila Karki Takes Charge and cabinet Expansion Plans


Sushila Karki’s Official Appointment:


Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki officially takes charge as Nepal’s interim prime minister at Singh Durbar at 11 am on Sunday.


Appointed on friday night to lead the interim government aiming to restore political stability and peace.


Interim government and cabinet Expansion:


Karki is preparing to expand her cabinet with consultations ongoing among close advisors and prominent political figures.

Cabinet expansion expected to be small, with about 15 ministers instead of holding all 25 ministries.


Karki may keep key ministries like Home, Foreign, and Defense under her direct control.


Candidate Names for Ministries:


Possible ministers include legal expert Om Prakash Aryal, former army officer Balanand Sharma, retired Justice anand Mohan Bhattarai, madhav Sundar Khadka, Ashim Man Singh Basnyat, and energy expert Kulman Ghising.


Medical professionals such as Dr. Bhagwan Koirala, Dr. Sanduk Ruit, Dr. Jagdish Agarwal, and Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha are also being considered.


Generation Z members are participating in online voting to finalize names.


Parliament Dissolution and election Plans:


Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel dissolved the house of Representatives on september 12, following Karki’s recommendation.


Fresh parliamentary elections scheduled for 5 march 2026.

Curfews and restrictions lifted nationwide, including Kathmandu Valley.


Schools in Kathmandu Metropolitan Area to reopen Mondayadministrative work on Sunday.


Shops, markets, malls, and public transport services have resumed operations.
