Congress Taunts PM Modi Over Trump’s Claims on India’s oil Imports from Russia
The indian national congress (INC) launched a sharp attack on prime minister Narendra Modi following recent remarks by US President donald trump about India’s oil imports from Russia.
Congress accused Modi of “turning into a silent baba” whenever trump makes controversial claims about India’s policies, including the alleged “Operation Sindoor” and India’s purchase of Russian oil.
On Saturday, congress communications in-charge jairam ramesh said that President trump once again claimed that his “good friend” assured him that india will reduce oil imports from Russia.
Ramesh remarked, “But when trump says he stopped Operation Sindoor or now that he's saying india will reduce oil imports from Russia, that ‘good friend’ turns into a silent baba.”
He also highlighted India’s rising trade deficit with China, which grew to $54.4 billion between april and september 2025, up from $49.6 billion in the same period last year.
The congress party alleged that Modi is afraid of trump and has delegated major decisions concerning India’s foreign policy to the United States.
The party criticized the Modi government’s foreign policy as a “complete failure”, claiming it has isolated india diplomatically and failed to protect national interests.
Congress further urged the central government to consult opposition leaders on critical foreign policy matters to ensure transparency and accountability.
Trump’s statements come amid tense US–India trade relations, as the trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on indian goods and an additional 25% duty on oil imported from Russia.
The US has repeatedly accused india of funding Russia’s war efforts by purchasing discounted crude oil.
In response, India’s Foreign Ministry asserted that its energy policy is guided solely by national interests, emphasizing efforts to diversify energy sources and expand cooperation with the US energy sector.
India has condemned the US tariffs as “unfair, unjust, and impractical.”
