Sacred Chithirai festival Underway in Kallakurichi District

The annual Koovagam Festival has commenced at the Koothandavar Temple, located near Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi district. The festival, held during the tamil month of Chithirai, is one of the most significant cultural and religious events in the region.

Ritual of ‘Thali’ Tying for Transgender women Begins

A key highlight of the festival—the symbolic ‘thali’ (sacred thread) tying ceremony for transgender women—has officially begun. In this deeply meaningful ritual, transgender participants symbolically marry the deity Lord Koothandavar, also known as Aravan, reflecting a unique tradition rooted in mythology.

Mythological Significance Behind the Tradition

The ritual traces its origins to the legend of Aravan from the Mahabharata. According to the story, Aravan agreed to be sacrificed before the Kurukshetra war but wished to be married before his death. As no woman was willing to marry a man destined to die the next day, Lord krishna assumed the form of mohini and married him. This story is commemorated through the rituals performed during the festival.

A Celebration of Identity and Devotion

The Koovagam festival is widely recognized as a major gathering for the transgender community from across India. Beyond its religious importance, it serves as a platform for cultural expression, identity, and solidarity among participants.

Festival Continues with Cultural Events

The celebrations are expected to continue for several days, featuring religious rituals, cultural performances, and community gatherings, drawing thousands of devotees and visitors every year.
