Where is the rule of period leave applicable in India?

In india, only two states and some companies have implemented the rule of period leave. bihar first made this rule in 1992. Here women get two days of paid period leave every month. kerala made this rule in 2023. Here girls of all colleges and universities get period leave. Girls above 18 years can also get 60 days of maternity leave.

Apart from this, some companies in india have also started giving period leave to women. zomato started giving 10 days of paid period leave in a year in 2020. swiggy and Byju's have also implemented a similar rule later. Recently, engineering company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced one day paid period leave for its women employees. This announcement was made by the company's chairman and managing director SN Subramanian in an event on the occasion of international Women's Day.

Has the government tried to bring a law on period leave?

There is no law yet in india regarding period leave and neither has the government given any direct order for 'paid period leave'. However, the government tried to bring a bill in parliament in 2022 regarding period leave and the items used during periods, but could not succeed. Bills like 'The Menstruation Benefits Bill 2017' and 'Women's Sexual, Reproductive and Menstrual Rights Bill 2018' were also introduced, but were not passed.

The 'Right of women to Menstrual Leave and Free Access to Menstrual health Products Bill 2022' proposes to give three days of paid leave to women and trans women during periods. The bill cites research that 40% of girls are unable to go to school during periods and about 65% of girls believe that it affects their school activities.
