In the highly-publicized defamation dispute between johnny depp and Amber Heard, a jury has made a decision. In 2011, the former couple met on the production of The Rum Diary and married in 2015. Heard filed for divorce after a year of marriage, accusing Depp of domestic abuse. Since then, the two have been locked in a bitter legal struggle. Depp previously lost a libel case in the United Kingdom, in which he sued the british tabloid The sun for referring to him as a "wife-beater" in an article.

With the support of the ALCU, Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post in 2018, detailing her experiences with domestic abuse and sexual violence, but she never referenced Depp by name. Regardless, Depp maintains that the allegations have harmed his career and reputation. In response, he sued Heard for $50 million in defamation, which was the subject of a recent trial in Fairfax, Virginia. The defamation trial, which began last month on april 11, has thrown up numerous revelations regarding the former couple's troubled relationship and their roles in the Pirates of the Caribbean and Aquaman franchises. The jury has made a decision after weeks of testimony and days of deliberation.

The jury's decision has now been announced, according to the Associated Press. Depp's libel action against Heard was successful. Heard was paid $2 million after winning a defamation case. Depp was given a $15 million prize. While the jury concluded that both actors are guilty for defamation against one another, Depp and his legal team consider this a major victory. The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive penalties as part of the total damages ordered. Heard, on the other hand, was awarded only $2 million in compensatory damages and no punitive penalties. Heard remained silent as the verdict was delivered in court, but she afterwards issued a statement expressing her "heartbreak."

Depp, who was observed playing guitar at a Jeff Beck concert in the UK over the weekend, was not present in the courtroom for the pronouncement of the decision. "The Jury gave me my life back," Depp said in a written statement in response to the ruling. Though there will undoubtedly be more remarks from both sides and numerous internet reactions, the high-profile trial that has captivated the public's interest for the past six weeks has come to a close with this judgement. Despite the fact that the jury found in Depp's favour, the heated legal struggle appears to have harmed both actors' reputations and careers.
