A white house spokesman said friday that the united states opposes China's demand for a ceasefire in ukraine because it would benefit russia and help the Kremlin prepare for a new offensive. "We do not support the call for a ceasefire right now," National Security Council spokesman john Kirby told reporters ahead of Chinese leader Xi Jinping's visit to moscow next week.

"Once the ceasefire is in place, russia will be free to use it to further strengthen its position in ukraine, rebuild, reorganize, and refresh its forces," he said. This would enable them to resume attacks on ukraine at any time of their choosing. Kirby reiterated that President Joe Biden plans to speak with Xi by phone, but said there is no call scheduled at this time.
