Even though the number of Covid cases in india has increased significantly since the third wave in january 2022, experts on monday said that the current increase in infections is not only "mild," but also "cause for concern." According to data released on monday by the Union Ministry of health and Family Welfare, 3,641 infections were recorded in India. It recorded 3,824 new Covid-19 infections on Saturday, the largest one-day increase in about 184 days.

With 18,450 new cases reported last week, the nation experienced a significant increase from the 8,781 instances reported the week before. The rapid increase in cases is thought to be caused by the Omicron variant XBB.1.16. "The new variant makes us more susceptible to respiratory conditions, along with other variables like a decline in Covid appropriate behaviour and a shift in weather. According to Dr. Randeep Guleria, chairman of the Institute of Internal Medicine and Respiratory & Sleep Medicine and director of medical education at Medanta, "We may observe a mild wave happening, but on the whole it will be mild and cause mild disease, not severe and not really result in hospitalisations."

At the World health Organization (WHO), Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, technical director for the Covid response, recently stated that there are about 800 sequences of Omicron variant XBB.1.16 from 22 different nations. The majority of the sequences come from india, where XBB.1.16 has supplanted the other versions that were previously in use. Van Kerkhove claimed that while the spike protein of XBB.1.16 has undergone additional changes, its profile is comparable to that of XBB.1.5. According to her, XBB.1.16 has demonstrated signs of increased pathogenicity and infectivity in laboratory research.
