Against this, in 2017, the Anti-Bribery Department filed an appeal in the madras High Court. The case was being heard before Justice Jayachandran. At that time, Ponmudi's side argued that there was no truth in the evidence of the anti-bribery department and that the anti-bribery department had calculated the wife's income as his income.
In this case, while the details of the punishment are out, minister Ponmudi and his wife appeared before the judge. A request was made on Ponmudi's side to consider age and medical reasons. But after their request was rejected, minister Ponmudi and his wife Visalakshi were sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and both were fined Rs 50 lakh fine has been imposed. The judge also said that since Ponmudi is currently a minister, the sentence will be suspended for 30 days.
