Celebrated on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar, Ugadi (also called Panchanga) marks the start of a new year. The states of Telangana, Goa, Karnataka, and andhra pradesh also celebrate this event. In the Gregorian calendar, the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra often occurs in march or April. Ugadi falls on april 9, 2024, a Tuesday.

Hindus in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Dadra and nagar Haveli, and daman and diu also celebrate the new year on the same day with a festival known as Gudi Padwa.

Ugadi: What is it?

The Hindu New Year begins on Ugadi, which is celebrated in andhra pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Goa, India. From the sanskrit words 'yuga' (age) and 'adi' (beginning), the titles Yugadi or Ugadi originate, signifying 'the beginning of a new age'. This day, which falls in the Gregorian calendar often in late march or early april, is significant to Hindus historically and culturally.

This long-standing custom is observed under various names, including Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Ugadi in andhra pradesh and Telangana, and Yugadi in Karnataka. Creating vibrant floor designs like Muggulu or Rangoli, decorating doors with torana, exchanging gifts, giving alms, receiving oil massages and ceremonial baths, cooking and sharing a special dish called pachadi, and touring Hindu temples are some of the customs observed on this day. According to telugu and kannada Hindu beliefs, pachadi, with its mixture of six tastes, symbolizes embracing all elements of life in the new year.

Entire Form for Ugadi Festival

Two words are combined to form the word "Ugadi": "Yuga" (age) and "Adi" (beginning). This auspicious day is commemorated with much fanfare and fanciness. Individuals from all walks of life celebrate the day by dressing up and indulging in mouthwatering treats. In addition to cleaning their homes and decorating them with Rangolis—a traditional method of decorating floors by creating various patterns with colored rice or flower petals—people also pray in temples to greet the new year.
