The New York Times has once again come under controversy over the reporting of the painful terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. 26 innocent tourists were killed in this attack, after which the indian government and security experts clearly termed it a terrorist attack, but the New York Times in its report called it an “attack by militants”, with which the Foreign Affairs Committee of the lower house of the US congress disagreed.

The committee publicly shared a picture on the social media platform ‘X’, in which the word “militant” was crossed out and “terrorist” was written in its place. The leader of the committee wrote, “New York Times, we have fixed it for you. It was a terrorist attack. When it comes to india or Israel, your perspective deviates from reality.”

India will take action against the culprits

India held a high-level security review meeting soon after the attack, in which prime minister Narendra Modi clearly called it a terrorist attack and promised that strict action would be taken against the culprits. In the briefing given to the cabinet Committee, it was revealed that pakistan was behind the attack. This attack has been considered a conspiracy to derail the peaceful elections taking place in kashmir and the progress being made towards development. The indian government has handed over evidence against organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba to pakistan several times in the past, but no cooperation was received.

Difference between extremism and terrorism

Extremism and terrorism are two different concepts, which need to be clearly understood. Extremism can be a form of disagreement and armed protest within a nation, which demands political change. Whereas terrorism is to destabilize a nation through a well-planned violence and create fear among the general public. This can be linked with support from across the border and global agendas.
