Trump's tough stance on Trade with India
Trump's remarks follow his threats to impose 29% tariffs on Pakistani products and his equally, if not more, severe trade posture with India.
In addition to threatening to put reciprocal tariffs on indian exports, the US president has called india the nation with the highest taxes in the world, potentially making them sitting ducks in the US market. Trump claims that New delhi has offered to erase all taxes on American goods, and he has temporarily halted the 27% tariffs he slapped on indian exports in early April.
"Do you know that they are ready to reduce their 100% tax for America? It will happen soon. I am in no hurry," trump claimed. However, Trump's claim has been refuted by India's Foreign minister S. Jaishankar, who stressed that trade negotiations are "complex" and any agreement should be a mutually beneficial one.
Trump tariffs raise concerns in India
Indian markets will be alarmed as donald trump prepares to reinstate his reciprocal tariffs with a number of nations, including india, in the upcoming weeks. Trump's 'America First' approach has drawn criticism from geopolitical and economic analysts who claim it hurts democratic allies like india while benefiting the US' strategic adversaries.
Though no significant trade agreement has been struck between the two nations, india has agreed to lower import duties on a number of US commodities, such as heavy motorbikes and alcoholic beverages.
